Dhamasa

Dhamasa, a diminutive spiny under shrub, bears stiff, generally prostrate branches and is prevalent in north-west India and Deccan. The taproot exhibits an externally brownish-green hue, possessing a rough texture with longitudinal striations; its core is yellowish-green and fractures to reveal a fibrous structure. Stem sections vary from 0.5 to 1.5 cm in thickness, showcasing diverse lengths; while young stems appear green, mature ones turn brown and spiny, featuring two pairs of sharp, slender spines per node, each about 1.5 to 2 cm in length. The stem's external surface appears green but tends towards a whitish-brown shade when dried, exhibiting striations. The leaves are small, nearly sessile, linear, oblong, with whole leaflets that range from green to blackish-brown, measuring 0.5 to 1.5 cm in length and 0.05 to 0.1 cm in width. These leaves lack a prominent midrib region and project slightly above the lamina's level.
